Theresa Giglio is working on opening up an adventure school called Scenic Venture that is an experiential high school alternative with a focus on health, wellness, and service. Scenic Venture targets high schools students between the ages 12-19 seeking a non-traditional educational path. It has the resources and facilities to help all types of youth with different needs including youth struggling with emotional and behavioral issues. Scenic Venture is dedicated to providing every student with a unique learning environment that incorporates adventure education and therapy. Adventure therapy encompasses many aspects of eco-psychology. It brings the natural world into the psychotherapeutic process. It creates opportunities for direct contact with nature. Some of these experiences include: (1) Mindful Sensory awareness of the natural world (2) Animal-Human communication, e.g., Equine Therapies (3) Place Bonding (4) Wilderness Retreats, adventure counseling (5) Ropes courses (6) Vision Quest (7) Sweat Lodge (8) Story Telling (9) Art Therapy (10) Talking Stick (11) Trust-building exercises. A student from Scenic Venture graduates with a diploma, a resume, and a lifetime of supportive mentorship. Scenic Venture is a one of a kind opportunity to enrich the mind, body, and soul while preparing students for life.
“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson- (American Poet, Lecturer, and Essayist, 1803-1882)
A bit about Theresa
Theresa Giglio truly believes in the resiliency of human beings but more so the capacity and ability of a young person’s spirit to bounce back from unsettling amounts of pain. Theresa’s vision is to build a space of healing and learning for students who have experienced emotional distress. Theresa wants to help create a safe learning environment for these children to embrace the strength of their survivor spirits so that they can direct their own future. Theresa wants to do this by creating alternative educational opportunities or, specifically, an adventure school for these children. Theresa has an adventurous spirit. She has traveled to over 22 different countries. She has skied glaciers, been caving; skydived, rafted waterfalls, ice climbed, surfed, built papaya gardens, and so much more. All her greatest lessons haven’t been learned in the classroom but nature. Adventure therapy and adventure education is something Theresa is extremely passionate about and wants to spread her knowledge with children. Theresa is here at Watson University to help figure out how to cultivate and manifest this dream and passion of hers to help young people receive the love, support and education they need pursue their passions. Children are the future of the world. Theresa wants them to not only know this but also believe this in their hearts.
